Notes |
- James and Mary Owens with their children, Charles, Daniel and Susanna, were the first family that came to the Marietta colony in the Northwest Territory on June 5, 1788. They emigrated from South Kingston, Rhode Island.
According to information obtained from the Baker Family History in the Marietta Genealogy library, James’ father was also named James and was a member of the Continental troops that took an active part in the battle of Lewisburgh in King Georges War. According to this same reference, James along with two of his brothers, fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill in the Revolutionary War. Supposedly James enlisted in Captain Samuel Phillips Co., Col. Joseph Stanyon's Regiment, Rhode Island Line.
Mrs. Gertrude Sprague Roach Wissler, born in Hardin Cty. Ohio, has been assigned DAR ID Number:91900. Her lineage shown in the DAR Lineage Books Volume 100, Page 195
lists James Owen, husband of Mary Gardner as the James Owen who enlisted in 1777, as a private in Captain Samuel Phillips' Company, Col. Joseph Stanton's Regiment, Rhode Island Line. (No. 72426) (Source1)
