- Pioneer: 1859 Harlow Redfield Wagon Train
Excerpt from Pioneer Women of Faith & Fortitude
Rebecca was born in Nauvoo, Illinois of parents who were early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and had endured much persecution.
When they were driven from Nauvoo, Rebecca's family settled at St. Joseph Missouri for a short time. Here her father worked as a charcoal burner to earn enough money for provisions to cross the Plains. He was imprisoned on a false charges, and it was not until 1850 that they were able to cross the Plains. Rebecca was then seventeen years old and helped herd the cattle for the company.
Their first home was at Bountiful, and then her parents settled at Richmond. Rebecca was married to Charles Lincoln in Bountiful in February of 1860. He was killed in a hunting accident the following December and a baby daughter was born on December 31st.
She went to Richmond to live with her parents and here met Matthew P. Fifield, a widower with three young daughters. She became his wife and with him left to settle the Bear Lake Valley in 1863. They camped in the vicinity of Montpelier. Rebecca was able to trade butter, eggs, and garden produce to emigrants passing through for many of the articles she needed.
In 1865, they were among the first families to settle in Weston, Idaho.
Rebecca was very ambitious and energetic. She raised a large family and provided for their needs. She was a beautiful seamstress, making the clothing for her family as well as others. She was a deeply religious woman who had a firm testimony of the restored gospel. She actively participated in the Relief Society in blessing the lives of many who were less fortunate.
She passed away of spotted fever on June 23 1899, just one month before her birthday and was buried at Weston.
