A question was proposed by Lilly Martin: What circumstances lead to the Lucian Earl Mitchell family moving to the Los Angeles area never again to set foot in a LDS church?
This answer came from Lynn Dial.
I think I may have an answer ? Over the last 40 years while gathering Mitchell family information I visited a few times with Afton Brimhall (now deceased). She was the grand-daughter of Joseph Smith Mitchell and resided in the old Joseph Smith Mitchellhome on the Benjamin Mitchell ranch property in Kamas/ Marion, Utah. She told me that Joseph's youngest daughter, Holly Barbra Mitchell, contracted smallpox and when he called for the "Elders" in the ward to administer to her they refused to come forfear that they might carry it home to their families. Holly died of the disease and according to Afton her grandfather never quite got over it and never went back to church. This may have affected the activity of some other members of the family, suchas Earl who I believe was married by this time. As far as being prevented from seeing his father goes, that family (Joseph's) would have been quarantined during the outbreak and no one would have been allowed to visit. Also knowing how family historyand stories get confused in a very short time I could see how if he (Joseph) had a disagreement with the Elders and it was described later by someone as a fight with the Elders of the church, well it wouldn't take long for someone to interpret it as a physical confrontation. I am not aware of any other story that could possibly relate to this incident which caused some of the family to become disaffected. I hope this information may be helpful.
